Something else you might want to look into is a paraffin wax "hand spa." It's basically an elongated crock pot that you use to melt wax in to coat your hands. I don't think it's got any long-term benefits, but it sure does feel good for a little while afterwards. When I asked my orthopod about Ben-Gay years ago, he told me that stuff that like wouldn't actually help but he encouraged it if it helped relieve the pain for a while (this was the same doc that turned me on to the Dr. Grip).
The job where I got CTS (blue-collar, not writing) was so notorious for RSIs that they actually made all new employees soak in one of these before and after every shift. That was the only place I ever saw one for several years, but last XMas, they were selling two different home models at Wal-Mart (I believe they were $30/40 respectively).
