Most of the unpleasantness on the list could probably be prevented if
everybody made an effort to avoid ad hominem comments - that is, ones
that attack the person who made the comments, rather than respond to the
comments themselves. I can't help noticing that, even in this thread,
there have been thinly veiled comments about other people on the list -
exactly the type of comment that makes the list less civil.
I think that, whenever people feel tempted to make a personal comment
about another list member - on-list or privately - they should think
twice and asks themselves why. When people are tempted to make an ad
hominem attack (and most people are, at some time or other), it's
frequently a sign that they've taken a comment personally themselves and
(from their viewpoint) are responding in kind. If they can figure out
why they take offense, they can probably go on to formulate a legitimate
comment rather than an attack.
