I used to work for the Institute of Materials in London and they publish
many journals and collections of asbtracts. They have a team of staff
abstractors who do most of the work and pay freelancers for particular areas
of expertise, or who have specific language skills not held in house. So the
prospects for freelancing with similar 'learned intitutions' are there, but
you need specific in-demand skills.

Hi,

Anyone have experience working in the scientific abstracting business? I
have a background in physics and astronomy, and some chemistry. Seems like
reading scientific articles and writing abstracts of them would be
potentially interesting work for someone with scientific background and an
interest in tech writing.

Also, what are the prospects for freelancing in this field?

Love to hear any stories you have.

Dave
