I wrote: "The real annoying part is that some PHB will actually hire
them for an outrageously cheap salary and then expect me to "bring them
up to speed".

To which Tom Johnson responded: "That sounds like quite a challenge.
Just how talented are you? Your job is to make your boss look good and
think of all the money you would save your company. Everyone has
potential and if they don't like TW, they'll find something else to do.
If they do like it, and become good at it, they'll be forever grateful
to what you invested in them. It is something to think about."

The "bringing them up to speed" Isn't really a challenge. There are
plenty of things that need to be done that don't require a lot of skill
and work well as OJT and I enjoy teaching. The real annoying part is the
outrageously low salary they accept. It doesn't help us bring our
salaries up to a better level when a wanna-be tech writer sells herself
short and accepts a lowball offer.

BTW - my job is NOT to "make my boss look good". My job is to use my
skills and experience to produce documentation and a knowledge base that
meets and exceeds the needs of the company and customers. Then the boss
will "look good" when the CEO says that hiring that old curmudgeon was a
good move because the docs and knowledge database are great.
