Not according to M-W10. It's probably a matter of insisting on using the same terminology that the application and its help system uses. All of the internal menus use the terms "workbook" and "worksheet" so using something different would be potentially confusing.

That sounds really odd. Maybe it's that Lotus 1-2-3 has spreadsheets
trademarked or something (even though that would be hard to enforce)?
