We recently had some layoffs/RIFs. I fared well, but during that uncertain
time I looked around--specifically at two fairly prominent SW companies in
the SF bay area. Each had thier own twists on the process, but both had
online forms. One company had a detailed web form that probaly was hooked up
to a database. The other had a two element web form--one field for the text
of your cover letter, another field for the text of your resume.

As a funny aside, I just now looked at one of those sites again, and at the
bottom of thier career page there was a banner ad disguised to look like a
criminal record search tool. A funny thing to find on a career page!
