Because, as a rule, unions will defend all members for "wrongful" dismissal
claims without first checking to see whether the dismissal qualifies as
"wrongful".

As a technical writer, I don't feel the need for a union to protect my
"rights" against the potential damage that an employer could do to me. At
this stage, all I would get is a claim on a portion of my paycheque, and I
have more than enough claims against my paycheque as it is.
