Hi, Gwyneth! Welcome to the list, and thanks for coming out of lurk mode. We
have discussed agencies many times since the list started in 1993. Try
searching the Archives on the Techwr-l Web site:
You can select a year. However, if you select Entire Archive, (Format =
Short) you'll really have a blast reading all of the comments about
agencies. The posts will be very helpful to you, so schedule some time to
read at your leisure.
Trust your instincts, your "gut feeling" when you deal with an agency. I
also learned that the agency could be pretty darn good, eh, however I needed
to switch to a different recruiter within the agency. Personality matches do
matter!
Have fun with the Archive search, and keep coming back to the list! Good
luck,
Jenise Cook-Crabbe

Subject: Best and Worst Agency Stories
Hi everyone:
I haven't been on the list for that long, so maybe this is one of
those questions that constantly come up, maybe not.
I am new to the "technical" writing profession, having come from a
traditional publishing background followed by some years in web
development. Not feeling confident about my skills picking up
contract work on my own, I am shopping myself around to the agencies.
Sometimes you get a feeling about the agency, but rather than get
burned, I though I would solicit your experiences on this subject.
What are the best agencies to work with? What are the worst? Is there
any point in contacting the "career builder" agencies, the ones which
ostensibly work for you rather than the employer (and on your dime).
U.S. content is appreciated, I am likely to end up back in the States.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Gwyneth
