I suspect George Orwell's 1984 never became a standard examination novel the
way it is in the UK: to me, and probably to most people who took O-grade or
O-level English, the number 101 implies the Worst Thing In The World (what
Room 101 contains). There's a TV show called Room 101. I imagine that
"Fashion 101" would be the worst fashions in the world... <g>
