Fixing resumes (was: Ethical question about resumes)

You might want to go over your resume very carefully.
This is good advice. For that matter, paying attention to the details is almost always good advice.
However, if other people are like me, one reason why people become obsessive about their resumes is that:
a.) it's something that they can control.
b.) it's something that they can do fairly easily.
In fact, in this job market, I suspect that the resume has very little to do with the lack of response. In many parts of North America, I suspect, writers aren't getting many responses simply because there are fewer jobs available. What jobs are available often require some digging to find, because they aren't being advertised in the usual places, or even at all.
So, although resume polishing is important, I suggest that people spend at least as much time thinking how they are going to use the resume. We've all had things a little too easy for the last couple of years, and it's easy to fall into the trap of imagining that all we need to do to find work is put our names in with a few headhunters or spend twenty minutes on a job board for a week or so. In fact, of course, we have to do much more than that - and possibly lower our expectations a bit as well.
