Hanlie Pretorius is fighting a losing battle of recommending UI changes,
when the product is in the documentation phase (maybe also late development
and/or testing?)

If the developers are at this stage battling bugs that keep the product from
functioning correctly, then screen layout and spelling errors will likely
take a lower priority.

If this important to you, perhaps you could become involved with writing
design specifications. This can give you an opportunity to create sample
screens before the program is written. The programmers may be happy not to
spend time planning screen design (or at least be equally willing to use the
layout you propose).
