Indeed, you can save a Maker document as text, and you get an option to preserve table formatting. At least in 6.0 and 5.5.6. So you shouldn't try to save the HTML as text, you should save the Maker docs as text.

BTW, not only do you lose formatting like BOLD, etc., you also lose your graphics and equations. But I assume you already knew that. (There are utilities out there that can convert graphics into ASCII art - probably not useful in this context.)
