I serve as our company's translation coordinator. I do this job in
addition to my writing responsibilities.
Personally, I have an associates degree, with additional training in
technical communication, computer science, and engineering. I believe
communication skills (oral and written) and attention to detail are the
most important qualities a translation coordinator must possess. I do not
speak any language other than English (I had a year of Spanish in college,
but it's not enough to help much with this).
One of my responsibilities is to spot-check the translated documents by
comparing them to the originals. That is where attention to detail is
imperative. Communication skills are important because I talk to people at
the translation company to make sure the project is coming along as it
should, that they are meeting deadlines, and to let them know when I find
inconsistencies in the translations.
