You will have to do this manually or with some clever macros:

1) The bullet-style solution (easy)

a) Create a new style for the new bullets, dont use any list numbering

b) Macro to insert your choice of graphic at the beginning of every para
with that style.

2) The custom number style - a solution, several variations are possible

a) Create gfx for each individual number up to the max you will use. Not
pretty or easy I know. Give them names like MyStem1.gif, MyStem2.gif etc

b) Create a custom style, and add a numbered list to it. Ensure first tab is
set to first indent.

c) Macro then:

i) finds the style
ii) reads the Selection.Paragraphs(1).range.ListFormat.ListString value
(1,2,3 or A,B,C etc)
iii) removes the attached list template from the paragraph
iv) inserts the appropriate graphic at the start of the line (MyStem & the
value from ii) )
