Hi Meena,
As the first technical writer in a small company, I'm
struggling with this, too. Many people see me as just
a writer -- who "pretties" up what other people write
-- not as a communication professional.
I've learned that the best thing we can do is learn as
much as possible about the company's products,
services, and internal processes and make an intense
effort to improve them. This goes beyond the doc set
and into the heart of the day-to-day work and
decisions. It also means ensuring that clear and
intelligent communication has a place in every
decision and process.
Steven Brown
Senior Technical Writer
