I try to follow two principles:
Ensure that the information is understandable. If you
use plain text for filenames and paths, odds are the
reader will understand your intent.
Keep it simple, for the reader as well as the writer.
Although the reader reigns supreme in our business, I
also consider the labor required for the writer to
bold or otherwise change the font for every instance
of a filename or path.
