I'm sure many of us would agree to the problem stated above. I too. Many of my Engineer colleagues have made it a habit to make fun of a TW's work. I too had the same feeling at some point of time, esp when I had to do lots of functional documents. But I would never let myself go down in spirits, and would always see to it that i win the fight by quoting some example. Once I even made an engineer write about a concept just to show them how different the two docs would be.
I don't claim all these (defending and convincing) would bring in a change. And I dont hope this attitude towards a TWriter would change completely. Best way is to accept the fact that your hard works may never be acknowledged and might sink among other MIGHTY works.
For that reason, I would completely agree to what Michael West wrote. Stay focussed on your goal, knowing that you've added value to the company's product.
