I'd write it out in HTML. Word will put in all sorts of cruft like font tags
to support 'round trips'. You can read it back into Word and get (nearly?)
an identical document. 

However, HTML is an ASCII format, so you can see and remove the cruft using
any text editor. I'd pop it over to a Unix box to use sed, but you could do
it with NT Perl or the global replace commands in Wordpad or ...

Also try HTML Tidy from w3c.org, but that removes all the cruft.

Read the de-crufted file back into Word and all should be well.
