Somebody who is having trouble posting to the list sent me the following comments. I pass them on with permission:

Here is a followup to this weeks poll question.

For those of you who are documenting something you are passionate about, do you feel you are more content in your job? Do you feel you are able to produce superior results because of your interest in the subject?

For those of you who are documenting something that is of limited interest to you, would you prefer to document something you are very interested in?

Would writing about something you are interested in make a hobby seem too much like work?

Here's how I would answer these comments:

Currently, most of my work is involved with Linux. I've always had an interest in alternative operating systems, and I use a version of Linux for much of my personal computing, so I am deeply interested in the subject I document.

The quality of writing on a stylistic level doesn't really depend on whether I like a subject or not. However, having an interest in the subject does make me more likely to have greater knowledge and greater willingness to go the extra mile.

I'm not bothered by being occupied with a hobby at work. Quite the reverse: it feels like a more integrated life. The idea that work and private life are distinct is extremely common in industrial society, but I seriously doubt that it makes for mentally healthy individuals.
