Bruce, you made reference to software, so maybe since I document equipment,
it's a different situation. But since I answered the poll "Somewhat, but
would not follow it on my own," yet happen to love my work very much,
here's my two cents.

The company I work for makes liquid packaging machines, the kind that fill
and seal cardboard cartons of milk, juice, fabric softener, etc. I admit
that before I worked here, I knew nothing about these machines, and, had I
*never* worked here, I never would. Packaging machines would not
particularly interest me outside of this building. ;-)

But I do enjoy my work!! I love writing, working on graphics, desktop
publishing (yeah, I'm one of those weirdos that actually *likes* converting
from Interleaf to Frame <G>), project management, databases, and all of the
other tasks that make up my work day. That's the source of my enjoyment,
not the topic I'm writing about.

When I started here, I was fascinated by the machines, and I still like to
watch them when I go out to the test line to gather information for a
manual. And, occassionally, something comes up at work that really sparks
my interest. I learned and wrote about ultrasonic welding a couple of
years ago... I had always thought those little pour spouts on the sides of
the cartons were glued on... :-)

Have a great Monday!!

Lisa
