I write a printed (as opposed to cursive) lowercase a and draw the tail
around it. I've seen people make do by drawing a spirally squiggle in the
middle.

If your handwriting is absolutely illegible, you can always recite it for
people to write down themselves or keep a stock of business cards on you
at all times.

I tend to go for the keep business cards on me, since a lot of people tuck
them away and find them again. Scraps of paper manage to get lost. Also,
I can concentrate on writing other notes on the business card I hand off,
such as "We met on the plane to Denver in May of 2001. We discussed
workshop techniques. I'd be glad to offer advice or services; please
call or write."
