I had an interesting example of the truth of this when last jobhunting. I
had a job offer from a firm I was genuinely reluctant to work for (it had
nothing to do with the job, or the people, just the location). The initial
offer was 30K, and I said no. They got up to 35K basic with promise of
salary review after 3 months instead of 6 before they finally accepted that
no meant, in this instance, "No," and not "What bid?" And I thought: got to
bear that in mind for next time...
