TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
:: I predict that we will see a lot more articles pulled from
:: the net all
:: together than we will see free-lance writers receiving
:: royalty checks (not
:: counting, of course, the court-mandated back royalties).
>I see two concurrent outcomes. The above, and the opposite. I think that
>some organizations will pull the online content, either for monetary
reasons
>or for "principle". I think others will pay the additional royalties. In
the
>long run, the companies who jump on board quickly will make out, as
>readership will increase (due to more accessible content) for them and will
>decrease for those who hold content back.
There already exist many Napster-like websites where content (stories,
essays, etc) is archived and accessed for free. These sites are paid for
partly by the contributors and the archivist donating their time and
expertise for free, and partly by online advertising (and we're also seeing
websites that are funded partly by sponsorship: the Techwr-l website is a
good example of web content that's free at point of access, valuable because
of donated resources.)
