I use my sample kit as a way of answering "so tell me somethng about
what you've been doing" or (horrors) "tell me something about
yourself". It's so much easier to talk about my most recent job,
project, process, whatever by using the documents as a visual aid. I
don't bring whole manuals, but sections or shorter documents of
different types: training manual, tutorial, user guide, system
overview, functional spec, security recommendations, etc. If I have a
clear idea of what kind of work I'm going to be doing, I make sure to
bring samples in the same area or industry.

Most of the time, no one reads anything long enough to really see how
I write. Half of them don't seem to care! But they can see what kinds
of things I've done, get an idea of approach, and so on, so much
better from the work itself than from a description of the work. So
mainly, it's an anchor point for the interview.

Cheers!
