Haven't read that Dummies book, but I don't have an issue with that, 
assuming it follows "Re-write to avoid gender-specific pronouns if 
possible. If not, then alternate in your examples..."

That's what I do in my own writing, and have for over a decade without 
objection from readers or reviewers. What exactly was objectionable about 
it? Would you rather see s/he, he/she, hir, or other such nonsense?
