Re: Thinking Patterns (was RE: Interviews (5 Year Question))
I've had to rewrite a few pieces myself along the way. And after
rewriting another writer's piece of trash, I can't help but thinking,
"there's hope for me yet."
There's nothing better than working for 10 or 15 at-the-last-minutes with a manager or director, reviewing a document he/she desperately needs updated for Monday morning, so we have to do it by Friday afternoon ("Can you update this, Karen? I have to spend the rest of the day in meetings <trailing off as he/she disappears around the corner>").
I ask, how about the way I worded this? And this, and this? I found out this isn't a feature any more, so I took it out. And I had to call x about y concerning z, did I get this right? Well, yes, we can put it that way, but how about if we say ...???
Then the manager/director steps back when we're finished, and says, "Wow. That was GREAT <and may or may not light a cigarette>." Of course, I never hear about it again, especially if the Monday morning presentation went really well, because it wasn't my project after all; I just "made it pretty."
But, those very few minutes, during which I can bask in the satisfaction of having done a job well, because I'm good at my job, make it all worthwhile.
Until the annual review comes around again...what th' hell do I have to do, squeeze fresh-baked brownies out my armpit at the start of every team meeting??? Cripes.
