Re: Colons and Quotations in Tech Manuals

Hi all -

Let's be honest here, whether a punctuation mark "may" also be placed
outside quotation marks came about as an agreement amongst typesetters
(probably in the 1920s or 30s on the basis of  "looks." The idea was to
make it look "complete," i.e. "finished."

Periods and commas are always put inside quotation marks no matter what
the grammatical or logical sense. Question marks, colons and semicolons
(tall punctuation marks) "may" be put on either side of the quotation
marks, depending on the sense of what is written.

I'm not sure if this "placement information" is still in highschool or
college grammar texts, but it was in the 1950s/60s
