I'm looking for (1) guidelines for developing effective PowerPoint
presentations and/or (2) examples of effective PowerPoint presentations. I'm
also interested in getting opinions about using PowerPoint to make handouts.
I'm currently drafting some guidelines for presenters in our company.
I'm drafting the guidelines in response to some disconcerting trends. One of
the trends I've been noticing over the last year is that presenters who use
PowerPoint tend to leave out many of the usual elements of effective
presenting like forecasting and summarizing.
I believe the oversights are a side effect of using PowerPoint for both
giving the presentation and creating handouts. For example, a good forecast
slide that lists the topics to be presented might not make for a very
interesting handout. Presenters then dispense with the forecast slide
altogether. In addition, presenters who also provide handouts of their
presentations seem even more driven to get ALL the information they want to
communicate on their slides.
So far my search has turned up guidelines for giving presentations and tips
on using PowerPoint, but very few sources address these topics together.
