Mary,
The referenced article is sales oriented. It usually pays to know your
audience. However, the approach should depend entirely on the type of
writing you are doing. Persuasive topics should target the group to be
persuaded. Technical works for devices or products developed specifically
for women might benefit.

On the whole, however, I believe "how to", mechanical, general business
(actually most) documents should be gender-neutral and follow appropriate
style for the particular industry. The audience is usually mixed. Don't
write like a guy or a gal. Just present the necessary information.
