Hey, Roy & company:

"Persist" has been used in this fashion, for good or ill, for a while in J2EE circles. I assume it happened because, in object-oriented terms, a data object reads itself/writes itself/marks itself as changed/etc.etc. to the database. Now, tools that mediate in that process are said to help "persist" data objects. Because read/write/etc. is too specific and won't explain all the stuff that the tool might actually do.

This usage <rubbingItInNow>queased</rubbingItInNow> my stomach for a while too, but after looking for alternatives for weeks, I turned off my flashlight. I've gone over to the dark side now.

Think of it this way: at least it's not passive.
