A couple of generally applicable rules:

* Use hyphens if there is a potential for confusion (e.g., 
"this is a world class assignment" -- is "class" modifying 
"assignment" or is "assignment" preceded by the compound  
modifier "world class"?)

* Hyphenate a multiword expression when used as a modifier; 
don't when it's used as a verb or noun (e.g., "a world-class 
team"; "this team is world class").

Looks better to whom? Aesthetics are in the eye of the 
beholder. Maybe it looks better to one particular reviewer 
but you can't know what looks better to every single reader.
