I don't disagree, Scott. I have too have two university degrees that took me 10 years to obtain, and the certification I'm most proud of (I have several) is my Project Management Professional (PMP) designation that is widely respected across just about every industry. It represents many, many hours of hands-on project management as well as passing a rigorous exam. These documents do say something about my capabilities (as yours do about you).

But as someone pointed out, many if not most managers aren't even aware of the STC, so a designation such as "certified technical writer" will have little meaning to them and probably to most technical professionals as well. You have to really look at all the factors surrounding the effort that goes into any certification (including college degrees) to render a determination of its true (or perceived) value.
