I think it can go both ways. I worked with a
programmer once who aced all his VB certification
tests but couldn't program his way out of a paper bag.
My husband, on the other hand, is a ace programmer (so
I've been told) but is dyslexic and an awful
test-taker. Good thing he has a personality. (And no,
I have no idea how he can be dyslexic and a good
programmer).
I was "teched" at the last company I worked for. The
questions were very similar to Andrew's. The guy had
only hired programmers and didn't know what to ask me.
(I'm not saying Andrew falls in the same
boat-different reasons, same questions). I had vague
knowledge of some of them. The guy had called me out
of the blue at home in the evening. I had just
returned from dinner with a friend that involved lots
of wine. I wonder if I would have handled it as well
had it been a scheduled interview (and no wine).
