In the past, contract work has paid more while being just as
available and as secure as full-time work (that is to say, not at
all secure).
One of my all time favorite managers assured me that the only difference between a contract and a salaried job was you know when the contract is going to end. (Oh, well, and the money.)
However, with the collapse of the dot-com mania and the
resulting widespread layoffs, this situation may no longer be true.
I've done both, and, right now, I'm somewhere in the middle, in a
long-term contract that is a mixture of contract and full-time (no
health benefits, but I get them elsewhere, and have lots of free
trips). In most cases, I prefer being a consultant, since I'm not
expected to donate free hours to the company and find that, in
general, I'm treated with more respect (my present position being a
notable exception). Consulting is often more varied, too.
But the choice is strictly a personal preference.
As far as I can tell, that's not strictly true. When they're offering
contracts, I do contract. When everything available is a salary, I do
salary. If I held out for choice, I'd be out of work way more often than I can afford. In fact, that happened once, when I was sure I wanted salary or long term contract, I got nothing at all for 8 months. That's a long while ago, now, but still... that's also when that improvidence came in.
I'm all for admiring the virtues of both ways of working, and for having a preference. I just wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket.
