Long URLs in emails

Subject: Long URLs in emails

In an email how can I ensure that

1 a long URL is not cut between lines and becomes unlinkable ?

2 the long URL between lines doesn't become totally unlinkable when the
email is forwarded to someone else and the < signs come into play?

I have read that there is software to shorten URLs for this. Is this
correct? Is it easy to set up?

Is there a way of maintaining the link without this software?

Regards
Irene
