Toastmasters would be good.
If you have a sport or a hobby, consider becoming
a coach or an instructor. You get to talk about
(and demonstrate) the thing you love, while addressing
a motivated audience. This allows you to begin
addressing small groups in a non-threatening atmosphere,
where you can develop your presentation/teaching
skills while expunging your fear of public speaking.
(And anybody who never HAD a fear of public speaking
is either an born exhibitionist... or not from this
planet... which may be the same thing...).
Those skills are valuable to most tech writers, cuz
you'll eventually need to address groups or at least
interview people, in order to do your job. Might as
well have fun while you develop them.
