Absolutely correct. You will never be able to generate the original source
document from a PDF file.

That said, Gemini (from Iceni Technology - http://www.iceni.com), is an
Acrobat plug-in that allows you to export text and graphics from PDFs into
several different formats, including Word. I'm sure there are other
alternatives out there, but I was actually quite surprised at how well
Gemini does the job. You can download a demo version that demonstrates the
capabilities of the plug-in quite well.
