Ctrl+A (F9) is fine for fields in the main body of the document - but it
does not update fields within headers/footers. At lest it doesn't work on my
system (Word 2000, NT) and, judging by the response, the same is true on
many other systems.

The easiest way to 'update' header/footer fields is to switch views.
Alternatively, you can close/re-open the doc.

Huh? I use doc fields for everything, and they update just fine with either
a right-click and Update Field, or Ctrl+A (F9).
Also, do they update when you close / re-open?
