I think sharing templates does have a purpose: when the receiver is looking
for an example of how to do a specific task in a template.

For example, I have received a FrameMaker template from someone who was
demonstrating different ways to automate attaching warning/note/caution
symbols to paragraphs.

Another example: after expounding that I feel the best way to get
non-whirlers to properly use your Word templates properly is to program them
so that using the template properly makes it easier for the non-whirler to
generate the content and format the document, someone asked me if I had a
sample template. My templates of this nature are for very specific content
with a very specific layout; I had no problem sending a template to an
individual as it is clearly of no practical use as a template without being
heavily modified.

On the other hand, if I were to submit a sample template to the techwr-l
site, I would probably modify it to be a little more of a tutorial.
