I don't know that preferences have anything to do with it.

Left to myself, I'd probably obsessively bear down at one project at
a time. However, I can't remember the last time I've had the luxury
of doing that. Even the last couple of weeks, in which I'm
supposedly focusing on finishing a large manual, I've still had
three or four other projects to juggle.

Part of the reason is that I've been working for startups recently.
However, I didn't notice much difference in established companies.
