If this is a possibility, have a look at "DocBook: The Definitive
Guide." It should be available on-line. In Appendix B, the book
explains how to write SGML that can be easily ported to XML. The
most important of these is using end tags and being aware of
case-sensitivity (XML is case-sensitive, SGML isn't), but there are
a few others as well.
The appendix also contains information about how to convert a DTD.
