Subject:XML vs. SGML for DocBook From:Megan Golding <mgolding -at- secureworks -dot- net> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Thu, 15 Feb 2001 09:20:55 -0500
For future documentation projects, I've decided to stop using proprietary
tools such as Word and begin using open standards such as DocBook with open
tools such as Emacs.
The DocBook DTD comes in both SGML and XML flavors. The two versions are
almost identical, according to what I've read.
In my research to date, SGML seems to be more commonly used than XML for
DocBook documents. However, my reading also suggests that XML is easier to
learn and use and is more advanced (direct support for web browser viewing,
for example).
I am working with Emacs and psgml and am now convinced that SGML is the way
to go with DocBook because "everyone else is using it". Can anyone suggest
why I might choose XML instead?
By the way, for those interested in making the same switch, here are some
resources I've found really useful in the past few weeks:

Megan Golding
