I tried this tack as well, but it did not work for me--I don't know why, it
just didn't. We are running Windows NT as well (and Windows 2000).

I'm glad this worked for you--perhaps Dannette could try this first.
However, there's always the other way to do it, in case she runs into the
same roadblocks that I did.

Well, it may not invariably work, but it absolutely works for me: I'd never
thought of it before, but I opened up a bitmap file in Paint (v.4.0),
selected Save As and saved it with extension .ico , and bobsyerauntie, I had
an icon. I could, and did, assign my new icon file to a Windows program. I'm
running Windows NT.

No doubt there are better ways to do it, but this seemed simple, cheap, and
