There is a place in Word (in Word 2000, select AutoCorrect from the Tools
menu) that changes things such as quotation marks and plain dashes to 'smart
quotes' and 'en/em dashes'. Disable these options (in Word 2000, select the
AutoFormat As You Type tab and clear the appropriate check boxes in the
Replace as you type area.
