I know from my experience in the hardward world, an "applications engineer"
encompasses many levels of responsibility, authority, and compensation, far
more so than in the tech comm world. The engineering field seems to be
dropping the "Sr." from titles, thus not making for much issue between
"applications engineer" and "Sr. Applications Engineer."
An apps engineer can be a project leader, team leader, even a manager
without the "manager" title. And all seems quiet in the front lines. Perhaps
the tech writing world could take a lesson from that...
