Subject:RE: Insure vs. Ensure (Was Affect vs. effect?) From:Hannah <to -dot- hannah -at- usa -dot- net> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:2 Feb 2001 11:07:48 EST
Let's not forget assure. Assure, ensure, and insure all basically mean "to
make secure or certain". Now, assure is used in reference to people and
setting their minds at ease and insure is generally (at least in America)
used in reference to securing property or persons at risk (as in insurance).
From a legal standpoint, I would avoid using insure unless it was clear that
the company is making a guarantee they are willing to financially stand
behind.

Actually, according to more than one dictionary, ensure and insure are
identical. I've seen the definition for ensure written as "also written as
insure."
