TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Not too long ago Michele Davis pointed out that she's been successful in
telecommuting for the past several years even though she lives in a part of
the country she calls anal about that sort of "revolutionary" idea. This got
me thinking...has anyone ever seen a survey about where in the US a greater
percentage of workers telecommute?
I see big advantages in telecommuting, but I'm enough of a social animal
that it might take me awhile to get accustomed to doing it on a full-time
basis. I also suspect that you might see a little less of the trouble that
Andrew Plato griped about with lazy workers if the telecommuters spent at
least part of the week in the office. If the writer is in the office only 2
days a week and only produces 2 or 3 days worth of material, yank them back
into the office and sit them next to the teacher's desk and see if they
improve enough with a tolerable level of micromanagement.
I'd love to find a position where I could telecommute part-time, but that
concept is pretty much alien to companies where I live.
