I can understand this attitude if there were no benefit to the company. But
it really sticks in my craw when it is put in these terms. Once more,
telecommuting is not a one sided arrangement. Yes, there are benefits to
the employee, but those tend to be less than for the employer, (i.e.. to the
bottom line). If telecommuting were to be less profitable than having an
employee in the office then it wouldn't exist.

As for Andrew failing when his employee took advantage of him. Phooey.
Life and work have changed. If the employee was working in the same office
and the manager/boss wasn't paying attention, then I would agree. But in
the new world of technology, where one cannot necessarily tell how much work
is being done by the amount of paper being produced/filed/moved etc. the
employee takes on much more responsibility. If at this stage of the game,
the employee takes advantage of the situation, they not only harm
themselves, but they harm everyone else who may have once had the
opportunity to telecommute but didn't because "employees are just not
trustworthy enough to let out of managements sight".

Maybe the attitude of someone having to earn the right to work at home is
the best answer for now, although I believe (and hope) this will change as
future generations become more computer independent.

Viva la revolution. Now back to work before Andrew complains about my lack
of production during my lunch hour.
