RE: Hardware Technical Writing and Photos

When I worked in an oil exploration company's manufacturing and engineering
division, we were plagued by lighting problems and printer resolution
debacles. All the tech writers quickly became illustrators. We created line
drawings of whatever part or assembly we needed to refer to in print using
Macromedia Freehand. These were 3D isometrics with lots of detail, but it
was worth the time in comparison to the headaches we experienced when we
tried to photograph things.

If a company is using the illustrations in several areas (i.e., marketing
slicks, user guides, tech manuals, etc.), it makes sense (IMHO) that a line
drawing would be the way to go. The advent of GOOD digital cameras, however,
makes this merely an opinion and not a definitive recommendation.
