For those of you who have marcomm responsibilities, how do you keep a
handle on version control for PowerPoint slides?

My partner recently had this same problem in that she was asked to make a
master document in PowerPoint containing all combinations of a set of
slides. The idea being that in order to save effort later, the users would
be able to pick and choose the slides they needed for their particular
presentation. The risk was that somewhere along the line, the master
presentation would be overwritten with a subset of itself, and therefore
lost.
Since PowerPoint dissallows password protection, and even allows you to edit
presentations that are saved as standalone presentations, the only solution
we could think of was to make the master presentation a template and a
read-only file. Therefore, clicking on this master document would open a
completely new copy of the master, which the user has to save in their own
workspace. The master remains intact, and hopefully protected by the
read-only attribute. Admittedly, it is easy to make the file editable again,
but we couldn't think of any other way to do it.
I'd also be glad to hear of other solutions!
